Verbal Commands and SCADA Systems

Alexa and Siri are in our homes. We can talk to our cars. Voice commands are everywhere in our lives today. So why not in our SCADA systems?

We recently developed an application using mobile tablets to give forklift operators the ability to control parts of their system without interrupting their normal routine. It was a fantastic idea that everyone bought off on, but in the end it was considered a safety hazard to have a tablet or mobile device on the forklift during operation. We had to agree that this was just as bad as texting and driving.

To retain the efficiency gains of control from directly from the forklift, we explored a hands-free speech recognition solution. This system allows the operator to give verbal commands to control the system without taking their hands off the forklift controls.

This solution can be modified and adapted to any WinCC OA SCADA system. The possibilities are truly endless including applications in database queries, easy report generation, screen navigation, process control, and so much more. This technology is not difficult to implement, and it's not cloud based so it can be implemented in an air-gapped network environment.
